How to Read Sheet Music on Guitar

Reading sheet music (also called standard notation) on the guitar, is not a single skill.

It’s actually a combination of skills, that once you learn all of them, you’re able to read it and play it on your guitar.

Those three skills are:

  1. Reading the note names on the staff

  2. Identifying the note names on the guitar

  3. Leveraging pattern recognition to connect intervals, scales, and chords you learn on the guitar to the notes you see on the staff

Something a lot of people miss though, is this:

The more you do of the third one, the faster you get at reading the notes.

But, this only works if you cover the first two points first.

Fortunately for you, I can teach you those in about 3 minutes, which is what you’ll learn in this video:

My name is Troy Serson (it rhymes with person). I’m fairly new to, and still learning the ropes of YouTube, but I’ve been teaching guitar 1 on 1 for 14 years and my studio is usually full with a waitlist.

If there is an opening, you can book a trial lesson and see if we’re a good fit to work together here: https://www.musiclessonswithtroy.ca/sign-up

THANKS SO MUCH! For watching, for reading, and for being here with me while you learn guitar. I’m thrilled to be your guitar guide.
